What is G-Cloud?

Government Cloud computing (G-Cloud) is a UK Government programme to promote Government-wide adoption of cloud computing.  Started in 2012, the focus is on using cloud computing’s capability for economic growth, capitalising on its cost savings and flexibility to create a more efficient, accessible means of delivering public services.

The Purpose Behind G-Cloud

At the launch of G-Cloud, Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude said: “The launch of CloudStore is an important milestone in the government’s ICT strategy to deliver savings and an IT system fit for the 21st century.  Simply stated, purchasing services from CloudStore will be quicker, easier, cheaper and more transparent for the public sector and suppliers alike.

Savings

Francis Maude continued, “Using cloud solutions that have already been secured and accredited will almost always be less expensive, and we will only pay for what we use. We will also know from the outset the cost of the product and, importantly, the cost of exit from contracts that will be no longer than 12 months.” (This has since been extended to a maximum of 24 months).

How to use G-Cloud

The Digital Marketplace contains listings for all services in the G-Cloud framework. Suppliers catalogue their services, describing features and benefits, allowing customers to search and then evaluate the potential fit to their business needs. AssessNET is listed in the Software as a Service area.

The G-Cloud procurement process is simple:

  1. Prepare your requirements – a list of ‘must-haves’ and ‘wants’ – and get approval to buy what you needhttps://www.digitalmarketplace.service.gov.uk/g-cloud/search?q=riskex
  2. Search for services on the Digital Marketplace using keywords
  3. Review services and apply the filters to create your shortlist
  4. Evaluate your options to find the cheapest or Most Economically Advantageous Tender (MEAT)
  5. Choose your service, award and sign the contract (or ‘call-off’)
  6. Complete the Crown Commercial Service (CCS) benefits form

More detailed information can be found in the G-Cloud Framework Overview and Buyers Guide, around which we have based this article.
